Materials & Craft
Mohair is a distinctive natural fibre valued for its light warmth, breathability, and expressive texture, making these cardigans perfect for layering, transforming outfits, and adding quiet sophistication to every wardrobe.
Our mohair cardigans are made using RMS-certified kid mohair blended with silk or other natural fibres, sourced from ethically managed supply chains that prioritise animal welfare and traceability. Mohair’s unique fibre structure creates warmth without weight, a luminous texture, and an expressive silhouette - qualities that define luxury knitwear and elevate everyday comfort.
Each cardigan reflects the time-honoured craft of hand-knitting, slow production rhythms, and an artisan approach that values longevity over disposability.

FAQ
How should I care for my mohair cardigan?
Gently hand wash in cold water with a gentle detergent without lanolin, reshape and dry flat, and air regularly between wears to preserve loft and texture.

What do certified mohair yarns mean?
Certifications like Responsible Mohair Standard (RMS) ensure animal welfare, traceability, and responsible land management - indicators of high material quality.

Where are Onika Knitwear mohair cardigans made?
Onika Knitwear mohair cardigans are thoughtfully designed and hand-knitted by the artist in Salzburg in small batches. Each piece reflects an artisanal process with certified natural fibres, ensuring both craftsmanship and material integrity.
Are Onika Knitwear mohair cardigans sustainable?
Yes. We use natural fibres from certified sources and hand-knit in small batches to minimise waste and emphasise longevity.
Find out more about Sustainability.
What should I look for when choosing a high-quality mohair cardigan?
Look for even fibre texture, balanced weight, resilience after wear, and natural drape. High-quality mohair knitwear will feel soft yet durable, and improve in character with gentle care.
Are mohair cardigans suitable year-round?
Yes. Mohair’s natural insulating and breathable properties make it suitable for cooler days in spring-summer and warm layering in fall-winter.
Does mohair itch?
Whether mohair feels "itchy" often depends on two things: the age of the goat and the fibers it is blended with.
At Onika Knitwear, we ensure our sweaters are comfortable for even sensitive skin by focusing on three key elements:
- Premium Kid Mohair: we use RMS-certified kid mohair. These fibers are significantly finer (measured in microns), making them naturally smoother and softer against the skin.
- We blend our mohair with Mulberry silk. Silk is a long, continuous filament that is naturally hypoallergenic and incredibly smooth. By wrapping the mohair fibers in silk, we create a barrier that reduces friction and provides a "liquid" softness you won't find in synthetic or wool-only blends.
- Artisan Knitting Techniques: Our sweaters are hand-knitted in our Salzburg atelier using techniques designed to maximize the "halo" (the fluffy texture) while keeping the core of the yarn light and airy. This prevents the "heavy" or "prickly" feeling often associated with mass-produced knitwear.
The Result: A weightless, cloud-like experience that offers warmth without the traditional "wool itch." While everyone’s skin sensitivity is unique, our silk-blend is specifically designed to be worn comfortably all day.
