Materials & Craft
Mohair is a distinctive natural fibre valued for its light warmth, breathability, and expressive texture, making these sweaters perfect for layering, transforming outfits, and adding quiet sophistication to every wardrobe. Whether you choose refined cable knits, soft balloon silhouettes, or seasonal statement designs, each mohair sweater is thoughtfully created to be worn and cherished.
Our mohair sweaters are made using RMS-certified kid mohair blended with silk or other natural fibres, sourced from ethically managed supply chains that prioritise animal welfare and traceability. Mohair’s unique fibre structure creates warmth without weight, a luminous texture, and an expressive silhouette - qualities that define luxury knitwear and elevate everyday comfort.
Each sweater reflects the time-honoured craft of hand-knitting, slow production rhythms, and an artisan approach that values longevity over disposability.

What Defines a High-Quality, Sustainable Mohair Sweater?
A high-quality, sustainable mohair sweater is defined by fibre origin, responsible sourcing, and thoughtful construction rather than by brand name alone.
The finest mohair comes from Angora goats raised with ethical shearing practices and low-stress care. Fibre length, fineness, and natural sheen are key indicators of quality and directly affect softness, durability, and how the garment ages over time.
Sustainability depends on traceability and responsible processing, often supported by certifications such as the Responsible Mohair Standard (RMS). These ensure animal welfare, environmental care, and transparency throughout the supply chain.
Equally important is how the sweater is made. Small-batch production, balanced yarn blends, and careful knitting techniques create garments that feel light yet resilient, retain their shape, and improve with wear.
Ultimately, a sustainable mohair sweater is one designed to be worn for many seasons — aired rather than frequently washed, cared for with intention, and valued for its longevity as much as its beauty.
Are mohair sweaters suitable year-round?
Yes. Mohair’s natural insulating and breathable properties make it suitable for cooler days in spring-summer and warm layering in fall-winter.
Are Onika Knitwear mohair sweaters itchy?
Whether mohair feels "itchy" often depends on two things: the age of the goat and the fibers it is blended with.
At Onika Knitwear, we ensure our sweaters are comfortable for even sensitive skin by focusing on three key elements:
- Premium Kid Mohair: we use RMS-certified kid mohair. These fibers are significantly finer (measured in microns), making them naturally smoother and softer against the skin.
- We blend our mohair with Mulberry silk. Silk is a long, continuous filament that is naturally hypoallergenic and incredibly smooth. By wrapping the mohair fibers in silk, we create a barrier that reduces friction and provides a "liquid" softness you won't find in synthetic or wool-only blends.
- Artisan Knitting Techniques: Our sweaters are hand-knitted in our Salzburg atelier using techniques designed to maximize the "halo" (the fluffy texture) while keeping the core of the yarn light and airy. This prevents the "heavy" or "prickly" feeling often associated with mass-produced knitwear.
The Result: A weightless, cloud-like experience that offers warmth without the traditional "wool itch." While everyone’s skin sensitivity is unique, our silk-blend is specifically designed to be worn comfortably all day.
