What makes Onika Knitwear sustainable?

Onika Knitwear approaches sustainability through material choice, production scale, and long-term wearability.
The brand works exclusively with 100% natural fibres, primarily Mongolian cashmere and mohair-silk blends, selected for their durability, biodegradability, and ability to be worn across seasons.
For the handmade collection developed in the Salzburg atelier, yarns are sourced with a strong focus on certified natural fibres, including RMS-certified mohair and fibres that meet recognised standards such as RWS, GOTS, OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, ICEA-certified cashmere, and the Alpaca Blend Mark, where applicable.
Production is intentionally small-batch and low-volume, reducing excess stock and overproduction. Each piece is designed to retain its structure and be worn for years, shifting the focus from seasonal consumption to long-term use.
Rather than relying on a single claim, sustainability is approached as a combination of responsible sourcing, controlled production, and material longevity.

Where is Onika Knitwear made?

Onika Knitwear pieces are developed between Salzburg, Austria, and Mongolia, depending on the collection and the specific expertise required.
The main collection is designed and hand-knitted in the Salzburg atelier, where each piece is produced in small batches using carefully selected natural fibres, with a focus on material integrity, structure, and long-term wear.
The cashmere capsule collection is developed in collaboration with small, family-run ateliers in Mongolia, working directly at the source of the fibre. This allows for a deeper level of control over cashmere selection, processing, and yarn quality, while maintaining full traceability.
Across both, the approach remains consistent: thoughtful design, responsible sourcing, and production methods that respect the material from fibre to finished garment.

How long does it take to make an Onika Knitwear piece?

Each piece in the core collection is entirely hand-knitted by the designer and takes between two and five days to complete. This slow production process reflects the label's commitment to artisanal craftsmanship and intentional creation.

What yarns does Onika Knitwear use?

Onika Knitwear works exclusively with 100% natural fibres, selected for their quality, performance, and longevity.
The primary materials are 100% Mongolian cashmere and mohair-silk blends, chosen for their natural softness, breathability, and ability to adapt across seasons.
For the handmade collection developed in the Salzburg atelier, yarns are sourced with a strong focus on certified natural fibres, including RMS-certified mohair, and fibres that meet recognised standards such as RWS, GOTS, OEKO-TEX®, and ICEA-certified Grade A cashmere.
Selected cashmere pieces are developed in collaboration with specialised family-run ateliers in Mongolia, where expertise in fibre selection and processing ensures consistency, traceability, and long-term performance.
Across all collections, the focus remains the same: natural materials, thoughtful sourcing, and fibres chosen to be worn and kept over time.

What is mulesing-free mohair?

Mulesing-free mohair means the goats are not subjected to a painful shearing procedure often used in industrial farming. We only source from certified farms that prioritize animal welfare.

Can I wash mohair?

Yes, you can - but it requires gentle care. Hand wash your mohair garment in cold water using a mild, wool-friendly detergent. Do not wring or twist. Rinse gently and lay flat to dry, away from direct sunlight or heat.
